The NCAA Settlement for Former D1 Athletes

December 8, 2025

Jack Huempfner

The landscape of college sports has changed forever. The NCAA is facing a massive financial reckoning in the form of a $2.8 billion settlement with former Division I athletes. This settlement aims to compensate players for the money they were barred from earning under Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules that restricted their opportunities.

If you played D1 college sports, this is the most critical information you need right now.

What is the Settlement About?

The settlement, known as the House case, resolves antitrust litigation challenging the NCAA's rules that prevented athletes from receiving compensation for their NIL.

 Total Settlement: $2.8 billion.

Back Pay Pool: Roughly $2.2 billion is allocated to compensate former athletes.

The Lost Opportunity Window (2016–2021): The compensation is based on the seasons between 2016 and 2021 when the NCAA's rules restricted athletes from earning NIL money. These missed opportunities are the foundation for the back payments.

Payout Formula: Payouts are tied to the revenue your school generated during those seasons, with the formula prioritizing high-revenue sports and conferences (like the Power 5).

🚨 URGENT: The Critical Eligibility Windows

There are two primary date ranges at play, and they determine if you still have a path to compensation. The full eligibility window for the damages class is June 15, 2016, through September 15, 2024.

However, the action you need to take depends entirely on your sport and scholarship status:

1. The 'Update Information' Group (Path is Still Open)

If you fall into this high-revenue category, you may still be able to receive a payment by simply updating your information:

Who: Athletes who played Football, Men's Basketball, or Women's Basketball on a full scholarship at a Power 5 Conference.

 When: Any time between 2016–2024.

Action Required: You must go to the official website and update your contact and payment information to receive a settlement payment.

2. The 'Deadline Passed' Group (Action Window Closed)

If you played any other sport or did not have a full scholarship at a Power 5 school, you must have submitted a formal claim form.

Who: Athletes who did not play Football, Men's Basketball, or Women's Basketball on a full scholarship at a Power 5 Conference.

 When: Any time between 2016–2024.

Action Required: The official settlement website states that the deadline to file a claim has passed. If you did not file your claim, you may have missed your opportunity for a direct payment.

Note: While the general claim filing deadline for the House settlement is often cited as October 1, 2025, the screenshot from the claims portal indicates the specific claim filing window for non-revenue athletes has closed.

How the Payouts Will Work

Even if you qualify, the money won't arrive as a single lump sum.

Slow Payout: The settlement funds will be paid out slowly and spread over time.

Portions: Even if you qualify, you may only receive a portion upfront and the remainder will be distributed over years.

Next Steps: Check the Official Site

Due to the complex and time-sensitive nature of the settlement, if you played D1 sports, your immediate action should be to visit the official court-approved website: www.collegeathletecompensation.com
